Anthony McLean mainly known as the singer/songwriter McLean is back with his new single “Movies” and we briefly caught up with him to see what he has been up to, his thoughts on the current music scene, and most importantly what he has got in store for us this year. For those who may not know much about the man himself McLean is a singer from East London that has been on the music scene since 2006. He is currently signed to Asylum Records here in the UK and Atlantic Records over in the US and has worked with many of our own British artists such as Tinchy Stryder, Tinie Tempah, and Chase& Status.
Though he has taken the back seat his single “Broken” released in 2009 was what made him pop in the music world, co-written and produced by The Schizofreniks and officially released independently it has since then acquired 20 million amazing hits across various social networking sites including YouTube. So once again Mclean his back again to make yet another outstanding mark on the industry and here is what he had to say.
MU: First and for most tell us a bit about what you have been up to because you have been pretty low profile, What has been going on with you musically?
MCLEAN: Hi, I’ve been busy writing and preparing. Been over the states quite a few times working with different producers. I now have my brand new single Movies which is produced by T-Wiz.
MU: Your music I would say is R&B Soul and in my opinion in comparison to what is out now your sound still has an old school feel to it. What do you think of R&B now days and do you think it has changed for the better or do you feel it has lost its touch?
MCLEAN: I like it all – it all has its place. I love the old school RnB – Maryvn Gaye, Otis Reading, Sam Cooke Boys II Men…but I also like Kirko Bangs
MU: Previously you have worked with various artists such as Tinchy Stryder, Tinie Tempah and the well renowned duo Chase and Status. I would love to know how was it like working with them and if you could pick an artist to collaborate with (be it singer, rapper or producer) who would it be and why?
MCLEAN: It was fun working in studio with them all. Chase and Status are a very funny duo so it was great and relaxing as well as productive. I’d love to work with Adele as she is simply amazing
MU: What has been your musical career highlight thus far?
MCLEAN: There has been a few which mean a lot to me personally, such as winning an Urban Music Award, being nominated for a MOBO Award, Performing at Wireless, Glastonbury and O2 but I guess the highlight so far is achieving a UK Top 10 with My Name
MU: Recently over the years we have seen the British music scene grow and develop into something amazing, I mean in the 2000s for example America pretty much ruled the music world but now days I feel it’s fair to say that British music has definitely taken a stand. What do you think of the new comers such as Rudimental, Sam Smith, Emilie Sande etc?
MCLEAN: I wouldn’t say Emili Sande is a newcomer – she’s been around just as long as me…and is superb in my opinion. I’ve worked with her in the past and would love to work with her again – such a talent. The new wave of talent is only a positive thing for British Music although I would love to hear a bit more RnB on the radio then what there is now but it’s all good.
MU: Who are you currently listening to now days, who has caught your interest?
MCLEAN: I’ve been listening to Childish Gambino – his first album I’ve had for a little while, but his new one which has just come out is just as good.
MU: Earlier on I asked what has been happening with you musically, Should we expect some new music from you soon? What have you got on the line up for us?
MCLEAN: Yes I have my new single “MOVIES” which is produced by the amazing Grammy Award winning T-Wiz. This is out on 14th April and is available to pre order from iTunes now if people want to get in there early. We will be releasing hopefully one or two more singles then the album, so I’m very excited.
