Billie Eilish – “Lost Cause”
In case it’s somehow escaped your attention, Billie Eilish has been on fearless creative fire throughout the first half of 2021, and “Lost Cause” is no exception.
In the music video Eilish is flanked by her girl squad, firing darts at a sign saying “MEN” and generally looking like she’s having the time of her life. It’s the latest single from her eagerly awaited second album Happier Than Ever, in what’s shaping up to be her most confident chapter yet.
Asbjørn – “(Love Like A) Teenager”
As an artist Scandi-pop one-man-boyband Asbjørn explores gender and identity, infusing his live shows with searching explorations of identity, gender and sexuality. “(Love Like A) Teenager” is the second single from Asbjørn’s BOYOLOGY LP – check out how catchy it is below.
Henjila – “Yellow Face”
Henjila’s new single is a pretty, neatly structured bedroom pop song with a sorrowful subject – the rise in racially motivated crimes against Asian communities.
Speaking about the single, the 19-year-old British singer said: “I recognised at an early age that society tolerates division and harassment based on skin colour… With the recent growth of xenophobia, as well as the BLM movement, I know now how powerful it is to speak up. I only wish that listeners and victims of racism feel the same warmth and empowerment that I’ve tried to convey in this song. The frustration, the sadness… and then the motivation, growth and hope.”
The serious, sickening subject is approached not with hopelessness but with encouragement for change, and without an ounce of self-pity.
ericdoa – “fantasize”
ericdoa’s hyperpop gleefully jumps between genres. Here’s his latest release of poppy, funky hip-hop, complete with a boisterous new music video.
TOMORROW X TOGETHER – “0X1=LOVESONG (I Know I Love You) feat. Seori”
This pop-rock track from K-pop band TOMORROW X TOGETHER follows the intensity of a boy’s first love. Interestingly the release, which reads as “Zero by one lovesong,” is a global collaboration, with Mod Sun and No Love For The Middle Child songwriting alongside BTS’s RM. TOMORROW X TOGETHER’s newly-released second album The Chaos Chapter: FREEZE racked up 700,000 pre-orders.
Tin Can Kate – “Neighbourhood”
Tin Can Kate are UK producer Jonah Maloney and New York singer Ella Kinnersley, together creating tunes of optimistic alt-pop. Following the release of “Corner” and “Mouse,” “Neighbourhood” with its hazy, lazy summer vibe is taken from the duo’s soon-to-be-released debut EP. Watch the quirky DIY video right here.
Dora Jar – “Polly”
Listen to “Polly” below – a Gwen Stefani-esque alt-pop song that was chosen by Zane Lowe to be his World Record on Apple Music. Dora Jar’s debut EP Digital Meadow has just been released, and “Polly” is the latest single to be taken from the collection of seven tracks.
